Tara Evelyn – Owner of Health Resonates, Massage Therapist, & Aesthetician

Learn more about my Maine Women in Wellness Blog Series Here!

I met Tara over a year ago at a Be Well Event to connect women in the wellness space in Portland, Maine. She was offering massages and energy work for the attendees. Tara was low key – not trying to be the center of attention, making her space cozy and comfortable, and simply sweet. There was a lot going on at the event, several women wanting to connect, share, learn more about social media and wellness. I was in a mental space of comsuming. Portland felt new to me, I had just landed my job at Athleta, and I distinctly remember feeling impressed with Tara.

Impressed meaning I could sense her authenticity and soft confidence. I could see her physical strength as a massage therapist and mental strength as a local business owner. And then I learned her age and was doubly impressed. Not that someone young can’t have the success she has, but it IS rare. She is a rare bird, and I love that.

She’s been paving her way and following her heart for a long time. When I asked her, during an outfitting at Athleta, “Why do you enjoy being a massage therapist?” she replied, “I love making people feel good.” She’s been following her passion since she was 10 and you can tell she is happy and in love with life. It’s a wonderful thing to be around someone like that.

On her nightstand: Latest read, gua sha stone, facial oil and eye pillow.

Random item in your bag right now: All natural deodorant, too many journals, more facial oils.

What book do you always recommend to people: Anything by Ken Follett. I love history and the human condition.

What does your self care/love routine look like? Morning meditation, bi-weekly bodywork or energy work, regular baths with all the relaxing smells and products, and alone time. I do a lot of deep emotional and physical work on others most days, so when I’m not working I’m decompressing.

Describe your fitness/movement routine: I have to say most of my fitness is while giving Ashiatsu massage. With Ashiatsu I massage with my feet, holding myself up (doing lots of pull ups) by bars on the ceiling, above my massage table. between this and deep tissue massage I usually “work out” 15-20 hours a week. If I have a slow week or need something to offset the my work day I tend to jump into a yoga class or go to Dynamics for a HITT class.

I always put my pandora to Bon Iver.

Go-to Ben and Jerry’s?
Sticky Sweet over Ben & Jerry’s ( gotta support local <3 ) and right now they have pumpkin sugar cookie or something along those lines!
Favorite fairy tale?
I loved the book Elle Enchanted when I was younger. It is different from the movie, if you haven’t read it.
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
Last gift you gave someone?
Blue blocking glasses.

How long have you been in the wellness business? I became a Polarity therapist and massage therapist in 2011, shortly followed by becoming licensed in Aesthetics. Growing up my mother managed a resort spa down the road, and I had the luxury of being a stand in every time a new employee needed training. I started receiving regular massage and energy work at the age of 10.

Can you describe how your career in health & wellness start?
I fell into it. I always loved the industry and I signed up for a course in Polarity, not knowing much about it. That blossomed into a passion much bigger.
What is one challenge you faced getting to where you are now?
When I see clients feeling better.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Piecing together an outstanding group of women to work out of Health Resonates. Although, I can’t take credit, they found me!
What advice would you give women who want to enter the health & wellness industry?
There is always room for you and your people will find you!
What has been your favorite continuing education, certification or training?
Ashiatsu had completely changed my massage practice. I can do longer sessions work deeply and not feel fatigued. With skincare I have been loving Gua Sha, it is a massage for your skin, oh so relaxing and makes such a difference.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Trust your intuition.

Thank you for sharing your journey with my audience! I’m thrilled to have you featured, finally AND to share a special holiday discount for people! Grateful for ya.

That brings me to my final point – massage memberships! I think this is great. I’d never heard of it until I went to Health Resonates, and I think it’s a fabulous way to stay self-care accountable. They have several options for the services you could ever want. Definitely worth investing in yourself for 2020. How many times have you spent $100 on a night out? Maybe it a massage instead and get centered.
Stay healthy and happy!
