“Success in life should be defined as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals.”
– The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra
May 2018 was the month I gave into a feeling which permeated me for a while. It was a sense that I was pursuing a career I wouldn’t be happy or satisfied in. I was burdening myself for reasons that no longer aligned with my life’s joy, purpose and potential. I committed to becoming a doctor when I was a different person. When happiness, wealth and security seemed mutually exclusive. It was about 8 years ago. This was a time in my life when I ignored the mental and physical messages my body sent me and simply fell in line with what I thought I should do.
As I leaned toward the terrifying decision to break free from an agreement I had strongly pursued for so long, a single book comforted me. The Seven Spiritual Laws showed me, with every page, that I was not pursuing a worthy goal. The more I read, the more it became vividly clear, that success and happiness would organically come if I went in a direction more suited to my natural abilities and desires.
What I find fascinating is how long it took me to figure this out. I’m embarrassed to divulge the amount of time I spent studying for an exam I’ve chosen not to take.
Not only was it the book, but my environment. The healing that’s happening within and around me is enormous. The change in my family’s dynamics is substantial, and will impact all of our futures differently. It was high time for my little transformation as well.
I’m proud as hell to say I listened to my heart this month. And I’m beyond grateful to this book for helping to start the healing process, which is far from over. That’s why I’m dedicating my June meditation practice to further exploring the Seven Spiritual Laws.
In addition to 10-20 minutes of silent meditation per day, I plan to begin each session by reading a few pages from one spiritual law of the day. Check out the bullet journal page I made to keep track. And if I feel inspired, I may record thoughts following the meditation.
If you want to join in, feel free to connect over social media and share your journey as well. I’ll depart with another quote,
“I will ask my heart for guidance; and be guided by it’s message of comfort or discomfort. If the choice feel comfortable, I will plunge ahead with abandon. If the choice feel uncomfortable, I will pause and see the consequences of my action with my inner vision.”
